The Society Development Initiative Organization (SDIO) is a registered, non-profit, non-political, and community-based NGO working to uplift and empower vulnerable communities in Southern and Central Somalia. Since our founding in 2001 by local intellectuals, elders, and youth, we have served as a bridge between underserved populations and international development partners.

We focus on providing solutions in areas such as water, sanitation, health, education, women empowerment, food security, and peacebuilding.

About us

From 2001 to date, SDIO has led over 30 humanitarian and development projects, partnering with organizations like UNICEF, World Vision Somalia, ICRC, Somalia Diaspora, NRC, SACO, and WFP. Major achievements include:

  • Safe water provision through wells and catchments

  • Emergency health & nutrition programs in Gedo and Bay

  • Education material distribution and school renovation

  • Food and cash voucher programs for drought victims and IDPs

  • PRMN protection and return monitoring with NRC

  • MCH clinics, sanitation outreach, and women-led enterprise programs
